FORMER JAG WORKING GROUP

The Former JAG Working Group was convened in February 2025 following the Secretary of Defense’s unprecedented removal of the Army and Air Force Judge Advocates General and the broader dismantling of established legal guardrails within the Department of Defense. In light of these developments, a coalition of former military judge advocates has come together to provide an independent, public-service resource grounded in the laws governing the use of the U.S. Armed Forces.

The analyses presented on this site reflect the standards, reasoning, and frameworks that JAG officers traditionally use when advising commanders on the legality of military actions. All factual assumptions rely exclusively on public information, but the legal principles applied are the same ones that guide real operational decision-making.

By publishing these briefs, the Former JAG Working Group aims to help policymakers, journalists, and the public evaluate whether current and future uses of the U.S. military are supported by rigorous, good-faith legal review.

Where such analysis is absent, these materials help illuminate what is at stake for civilian control of the military, adherence to the rule of law, and the integrity of national security decision-making.
